Bouquets of Roses
Roses have existed for thousands of years. In Ancient Greece and Rome, the red rose was associated with Aphrodite and Venus. The rose is the quintessential symbol of love and beauty throughout Western Civilization. But the rose’s significance as an icon of beauty doesn’t stop there. The red rose is the official flower of the United States. (It earned that designation in 1986.) It is the state flower of New York. The state flower of Oklahoma is the Oklahoma Rose, and the Georgia state flower is the Cherokee Rose. Iowa and North Dakota share the Wild Prairie Rose as their state flower. The Canadian province of Alberta considers the rose its provincial flower.

Categories of Roses
There are so many different rose species, cultivars, and hybrid varieties that keeping them straight would be impossible for anyone – including most experts. The American Rose Society figured out a way to simplify things for rose lovers everywhere. They created two categories, and all roses are classified in one of the two groups.
The first category consists of Old Garden Roses. All of the antique and heirloom roses belong to that category. This means that all known species and cultivars that were cultivated before and up to 1867 fall into this group.
The second category consists of Modern Roses. Roses that were cultivated after 1867 are modern roses.
There is a reason that the year 1867 is so significant. That is the year that the hybrid tea rose was introduced to the world. It is the ideal flower for bouquets of roses.
Old Garden Roses
Old Garden Roses have existed for thousands of years. There are reasons that these beauties have existed for as long as they have. Their good genes made it possible for these rose species to adapt to most weather and soil conditions. And their most admirable quality is their magnificent fragrance.
But Old Garden roses weren’t perfect, and they had their disadvantages for rose lovers. Most of them are one-time summer bloomers. Many were fast-growing shrubs that spread out, so they needed a lot of space. Another negative for rose lovers was the fact that single-blooming roses don’t last long, so they’re useless as cut flowers.
Modern Rose Class
The arrival of the hybrid tea rose, and the way its buds unfold became (and still is considered) the standard of beauty by which all other roses are compared. In addition to the hybrid tea roses, different cultivars in the Modern Rose class include:
- Floribunda roses
- Polyantha roses
- Grandiflora roses
- Climbing roses
- Shrub roses
Modern shrub roses have many of the appealing character traits of old garden roses. But the process of hybrid breeding makes them more resistant to black spot, fungal diseases, and insect infestations.
Rose Colors and Their Meanings
Red Roses
Red roses are synonymous with romantic love and passion. They represent the ultimate symbol of passionate love and affection. That is why they’re considered the go-to flower for people who want to express romantic sentiments on Valentine’s Day. That is not their only use in that context. Red roses are appropriate any time people want to express their passionate love for someone.
Pink Roses
Pink roses are considered a multi-purpose rose. As such, they are suitable for conveying thanks, to cheer someone up, or to recognize a romantic event or occasion. Pink roses are the earliest cultivated roses. Historically, they have been used in art and home decoration.
Pink roses appeared on everything from greeting cards to wallpaper during the Victorian era. They are still connected with sentiments of gratitude and love. Light pink represents admiration and gentleness, while dark pink roses symbolize appreciation and gratitude.
White Roses
White roses reveal the structural beauty of roses in general. White roses are well suited to all occasions that honor special people. They also mark times for which people might want to celebrate a new beginning or bid farewell to someone. Pure white sends your respects to the bereaved. They also honor new starts while simultaneously sharing your homes for whatever the future holds.
Historically, the white rose was (and still is) seen as a symbol of innocence and purity. The association with innocence and purity led people to incorporate white roses into wedding flower arrangements – especially in bridal bouquets. The association between white roses and pure love led to their adaptation as a multi-purpose flower that is often used in ceremonial celebrations like christenings, graduations, and anniversaries.
Yellow Roses
The color yellow is, and always has been, associated with the sun, and the warmth that the sun brings to all of life. The color conveys the kindness that people feel from friendships, but it also represents optimism. Yellow roses share wishes for well-being, a desire to lift someone’s spirits, or a toast to friendship.
Orange Roses
Orange roses are the result of early 20th century efforts at cross-breeding red and yellow roses. The resulting orange color combines the romantic expressions of true love that are synonymous with red roses and the yellow rose’s connection with friendship. The combined meanings deliver an entirely new message that suggests a developing romance that evolves from a friendship.
