Other than the presence of loved ones, flowers can be one of the most therapeutic non-medical treatment to speed up the healing or recovery process for people who are sick or injured. While there may not be any hard and fast rules or guidelines that spell out the protocol for giving get well flowers, the etiquette for giving flowers as gifts extends to flowers for someone who is sick, hospitalized, or undergoing treatment for an illness.
Here are some tips:
- Always send flowers as soon as you learn of the illness or injury. If you wait, you may risk alienating the person to whom you want to send well wishes. They may mistakenly think that you don’t care. They may also assume that you don’t know about their situation.
- Include a handwritten message that expresses your hopes for their speedy recovery. The message you share should be appropriate for the circumstances. A personalized message is an indication of your concern for the person who is under-the-weather.
- If you’re having get well delivery or taking your get well flowers to someone’s home, consider giving them a container garden with a variety of succulents instead of flowers. Our greenhouse has a fantastic selection of plants from which to create a customized dish garden. And plants don’t need to have fresh water every day the way flowers do.
- Think about potential allergic reactions. Pollen allergies are widespread. The best way to minimize the possible response that your recipient will have is by choosing flowers that don’t have exposed pollen. Roses, hydrangeas, and peonies are good examples of flowers that have closed heads. Daisies and Gerbera daisies are examples of flowers whose pollen is exposed.
- When you want to send get well flowers to someone who is hospitalized, find out if they can receive flowers. Some hospital units prohibit flowers. You may not be able to send flowers to an intensive care unit, a cardiac care unit, and a burn unit, to name a few. If flowers aren’t allowed, ask if you can order a plant or container garden without flowers for get well delivery.
- Ask us to use flowers with woody stems for get well flowers that are going to a hospital patient. We’ll make a point of using flowers that don’t need fresh water every day, and we can include floral foam to keep the stems moist so the flowers will stay fresh for the duration of the recipient’s hospitalization.
- Resist the temptation to purchase massive, over-the-top, and elaborate arrangements for hospital patients. Large designs take up space on the hospital tray table, and it may hinder the patient’s ability to find essential supplies.
